Death Anxiety and Terminal Care Attitudes of nurses in Hospice Palliative Units

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between the death anxiety and terminal care attitudes of nurses in hospice palliative units.
Methods: A sample of 187 nurses who worked for more than 6 months in hospice palliative units at 16 palliative care agencies in Korea was recruited. Data was analyzed using WIN SPSS 22.0. General characteristics, clinically relevant characteristics, death anxiety and terminal care attitudes were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA. The correlation between death anxiety and terminal care attitudes were analyzed by Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
Results: The research findings were as follows: 1)The average of death anxiety was 91.47(SD=9.33). There were significant differences in death anxiety according to age(F=4.613, p=.004), religion(F=2.812, p=.041), current work unit(F=7.221, p=.000), the total clinical experience(F=6.546, p=.000), the first time experienced the patient’s death(F=2.645, p=.035), the number of knowledge acquisition paths related to hospice care(F=4.065, p=.019). 2)Terminal care attitudes was significantly higher in participants with Catholics, hospice nurse with over 11 years of work experience, one knowledge acquisition path. General nurses’ terminal care attitudes were statistically significantly lower than charge nurses or head nurses. 3). The death anxiety had negative correlations with terminal care attitudes(r=-.444, p<.001).
Conclusion: The death anxiety of nurses in hospice palliative units was reported to have negative correlations with terminal care attitudes. Therefore, it is necessary to develop differentiated educational programs according to the characteristics of nurses in hospice palliative units to change the hospice care in a positive manner.
